The Janubio Salt Flats It is located in a “Place of Geological Interest” where the old Royal Port of Janubio was located, which is currently a coastal lagoon that is closed by a chain of boulders that has originated from coastal drift of the products of the dismantling of the flows. of the eruptions of 1730-1736. In this “LIG” the marine layers of the Tortonian and Pliocene are also observed. In relation to this “LIG” are the Janubio Salt Flats, which have always been linked to fishing and the salting and canning industry. They are the greatest reference and emblem of the salt culture in the Canary Islands. They are the largest salt flats and have the greatest landscape value on the islands, being considered one of the most important salt mills in the world. The production and subsequent marketing of salt has always been carried out with artisanal methods, not admitting, unlike other industries, mechanization.
